This display is merely to demonstrate the current (2018) distribution of our family names in Germany. This distribution will change over the years, but with many names you can easily see the clustered areas, which many times represent the "homeland" of this name.

As an example, take the Maienschein map above. We know for sure how and where this name came into being. The "where" was the small village of Altengronau. Interestingly enough, that is where the flags are clustered on this map.
